Discover the enduring charm of white tiles and how their texture can bring depth and character to your home
White tiles bring a sense of calm and balance to any space, making them an exceptionally adaptable choice. Whether admired on their own or paired with virtually any other colour, they offer timeless appeal. But there’s more to this neutral than first meets the eye.
In her role developing new products, Anita Rivers spends countless hours in the lab exploring the nuances of colour. When crafting whites, she starts with our hand mixed opaque white frit and then introduces a tiny amount of pigment from our collection of over fifty shades. “Even subtle undertones in white can completely change its effect,” Anita notes. “A hint of blue produces a cool, crisp white, perfect for a sleek modern bathroom. A touch of pink softens the tone, creating a warm, inviting white that suits a country-style kitchen beautifully.”
Our colours are celebrated for their depth and sophistication. While the exact formulas remain closely guarded, we can reveal that one of our favourite whites is crafted from no fewer than four distinct pigments, each contributing to its unique and carefully balanced tone.
While all our white tiles are stunning, subtle variations can influence which one is best for your home.
Considering the natural and artificial light in your space, along with the atmosphere you want to create, will help you select the perfect white tile.
Cool whites feature undertones of blue, green, or grey, giving them a crisp, bright appearance. They’re perfect for brightening darker rooms with limited natural light without overwhelming the space.
In spaces with warm artificial lighting, cool whites help counterbalance the warmth, preventing the room from feeling too yellow. Conversely, in cooler-lit areas - such as rooms with LED lighting - a warm white can soften the environment.
Cool white tiles also work well in rooms flooded with natural light, such as south-facing kitchens or bathrooms, providing balance and a fresh, airy feel even in spaces that receive warm sunlight throughout the day.
Warm whites feature subtle undertones of beige, pink, or yellow, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere. They are perfect for traditional interiors, adding softness and warmth that make spaces feel intimate. When paired with brass fixtures, wood, and ornate details, warm whites help create a classic and timeless look.
Warm white tiles evoke a sense of comfort and elegance, enhancing spaces where a welcoming, homely feel is desired
White tiles offer a timeless, classic look, but adding texture is a clever way to bring subtle interest and personality to your space. Textured tiles maintain a clean aesthetic while adding depth, character, and versatility - ensuring your space remains beautiful for years, even if you change paint colours, furniture, or accessories.
Texture can transform the way light interacts with your tiles, creating visual appeal without overwhelming your design. Here’s a guide to the different textures we offer:
Our gloss and crackle-glazed white tiles reflect light delicately across the room, adding a subtle shimmer that enhances brightness and atmosphere. The gentle undulations and surface character bring interest and depth, perfect for creating a polished, elegant feel without overpowering your overall design.
Our rustic, handmade white tiles - such as those from the Kennet and Ullswater collections - are crafted from hand pressed terracotta. Each tile has a unique surface, so no two are exactly alike.
This handcrafted texture adds warmth, character, and depth, catching the light beautifully while maintaining a neutral palette. Rustic tiles are an ideal choice for creating feature walls or areas where natural charm and individuality are desired.
The Marlborough Matts collection offers a soft, contemporary finish without shine or reflection. These tiles are perfect for calm, relaxed environments - ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, or living spaces with abundant light. The understated surface creates a serene backdrop, letting other design elements shine while still offering subtle texture and interest.
From subtle whites to soft off-whites, our collections offer a range of tones and textures. These are some of our favourites.
