A guide to choosing porcelain floor tiles

Discover how to choose beautiful porcelain floor tiles that combine timeless style with exceptional durability

While we're best known for our distinctive glazes and hand painted tile collections, there's another area in which we have developed considerable expertise: exceptional porcelain floor tiles.

Today's finest porcelain tiles capture the beauty of natural stone and timber with remarkable authenticity. Advances in manufacturing mean they not only replicate the appearance of these materials but also their texture, creating surfaces that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Alongside their aesthetic appeal, porcelain offers outstanding practicality. It is frost-proof, exceptionally durable, compatible with underfloor heating and completely stain resistant - making it a wonderfully low-maintenance alternative to natural stone or wood.

Choosing the right porcelain floor can feel overwhelming. With so many options available, it can be difficult to judge quality until the floor has been installed. That's why we've carefully curated a collection that showcases only the finest examples available.

We work exclusively with leading manufacturers in Italy and Spain, selecting tiles that meet our uncompromising standards for design, craftsmanship and authenticity. Every collection has been chosen for its ability to faithfully recreate the character and beauty of natural materials.

In this guide, we share some of the knowledge we've gained over decades of working with porcelain, helping you choose a floor that is both timeless and practical.

When technology meets craftsmanship

Our latest collections demonstrate just how far porcelain manufacturing has evolved.

Take French Limestone, discovered by our Managing Director, Jamie, during a research trip to Modena, Italy. Produced using advanced three-dimensional technology, these tiles beautifully recreate the worn limestone floors found throughout Provence. Every subtle variation, softly tumbled edge and blend of warm honeyed and silvery tones has been carefully reproduced, resulting in a floor that both looks and feels wonderfully authentic.

Our Weathered Oak collection follows a similarly meticulous process. Genuine reclaimed oak boards, bearing the marks and patina of centuries of use, are painstakingly restored before being photographed and recreated on porcelain using state-of-the-art printing technology. The result captures all the warmth and character of aged timber while offering the durability and ease of porcelain.

For those drawn to the warmth and relaxed character of Mediterranean interiors, our Andalucia collection celebrates the enduring appeal of traditional terracotta. Inspired by timeworn clay floors found throughout southern Spain, Andalucia captures the rich earthy tones, subtle tonal variation and handcrafted appearance of authentic terracotta while delivering all the practical advantages of porcelain. It's become one of our most popular collections, offering a timeless look that's equally at home in country kitchens, garden rooms and contemporary homes seeking a softer, more organic aesthetic.

Why choose porcelain?

Natural stone and timber are undeniably beautiful, but they require ongoing care and naturally change over time. Porcelain delivers much of the same visual appeal while offering significant practical advantages.

Its dense, non-porous surface makes it exceptionally resistant to stains, scratches and everyday wear. Unlike natural stone, it never requires sealing, and spills - from cooking oils to red wine - can simply be wiped away with a damp cloth.

Porcelain also retains its original appearance year after year, resisting fading and colour changes that often occur with natural materials. For busy family homes, it's an investment that combines lasting beauty with everyday practicality.

Where can porcelain be used?

One of porcelain's greatest strengths is its versatility.

It's an ideal choice for high-traffic areas such as hallways, kitchens and open-plan living spaces, where durability is just as important as appearance. Its excellent thermal conductivity makes it perfectly suited to underfloor heating, while its slip-resistant finishes make it equally at home in bathrooms and contemporary wet rooms.

Because porcelain is frost-resistant, it can also be used outdoors, allowing you to create a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. Many homeowners choose to continue the same flooring from a living room through doors onto a terrace or around a swimming pool, creating a beautifully unified design.

How is porcelain made?

Creating premium porcelain is a highly specialised process that combines traditional ceramic craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.

Porcelain begins as a carefully balanced blend of fine white clay, feldspar, kaolin and quartz. Like terracotta, it is ceramic, but it is fired at far higher temperatures and compressed under immense pressure, producing an exceptionally strong, dense material.

The decorative surface is then created using sophisticated digital printing technology. High-resolution images of genuine stone or timber are applied before firing, allowing every vein, grain and natural variation to be captured with remarkable precision.

The quality of the finished tile depends on every stage of this process - from the original photography and printing techniques to the glazes and surface finishing. Inferior porcelain often reveals itself through blurred imagery, repetitive patterns or unrealistic textures. We carefully select only collections that achieve a convincing natural appearance, ensuring every tile reflects the beauty of the material that inspired it.

Surface finishes offer further opportunities to tailor the look. Whether you prefer softly textured limestone, gently weathered timber, polished contemporary finishes or traditional tumbled edges, the right finish enhances both the realism of the tile and the overall character of the space.

Tips for planning your floor

The way porcelain tiles are laid has a significant influence on how a room feels.

In narrow spaces, laying the tiles across the shortest dimension can visually widen the room, reducing the impression of a long corridor. In square rooms, rectangular formats introduce movement and subtly guide the eye through the space.

For a more traditional appearance, consider a mixed-size flagstone layout. Collections such as French Limestone or Tivoli are available in multiple sizes, allowing you to recreate the informal charm of historic stone floors.

Finally, where possible, begin each room with a full tile at the threshold. This simple detail creates a stronger sense of continuity and flow throughout the home.
